Greg's Return
RIP Mike and Ben
|
|
[Myles's
comments are in big, blue, Italicized brackets, just like
these.]
Originally aired Monday,
June 5th.
[This
episode is different than the others. There aren't really
any skitches, per se. It took a hell of a long time for Tim,
Heckman, and some others, to put the whole thing together,
and I think it really works as a cohesive "Behind the Music"
kind of bio-tribute.]
|
Last
words:
|
|
|
|
|
Mike and
Ben discuss the perks and risks of their
careers. As they mention the risks inherent in
being on-campus celebrities, the footage becomes
slow-motion, black-and-white, and they slowly
fade out of the frame.
|
[Slow
motion? Weepy music? Heckman written all over
it.]
|
In
Loving Memory of Mike and Ben:
|
|
|
|
|
Sad music
accompanies footage of the boys disappearing
from spots around campus.
|
[The
sentiment kind of vanishes when you learn that they were
scripted and frequently had to be stopped from giggling.
Jason actually got me all choked up when we were
filming.]

[HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA.]
|
Try-Outs
for the Parts of Mike and Ben:
|
|
|
|
|
Footage
from October of 1999 in which Sean Heckman tries
out a number of actors for the roles of "Mike"
and "Ben." In between, a friend who auditioned
but didn't make the cut shares his thoughts over
the piano. Concludes with Mike and Ben sharing
their feelings on getting the part, and a
bizarre improvised audition tape.

Carl

Ben
Larson,
Mike

Roberta

[Am
I the only one who thinks Sean M. makes a better Ben than
Ben? But it's okay, Carl is a better Mike than Mike. Those
guys were robbed.]

The
Women Who Loved Mike Pesses:

The two
ladies of Mike's life share tender memories of
their touching romance.

[I
was sitting next to Ben when this first aired. He thought it
was pretty funny. At first. But it just goes on and on...
]
[This
is actually a story George Burns told about Jack Benny. I
just thought you'd like to know that. When I filmed it, I
ended by saying "But then I slept with Mike's girlfriend to
teach him a lesson" but that didn't fit the episode, so we
trimmed it.]
|
When
They Were Good:
|
|
|
|
|
Co-workers
of the boys speak glowingly of them as
performers and humans. Their testimonials are
followed by footage from the last day of
shooting in which Mike and Ben go on a wild
rampage.

Mike

Ben
Larson,
Joe
Walcek,
Judy
Ashouri,
Sean
Hart

[It
really looks like Hart has 2 cameras at different angles!
I'm told it only took two takes, which is astonishing to me.
My hat's off to Sean.]

Opposite
Day!:
|
|
|
|
|
In honor
of Mike and Ben, a never-before aired bit in
which everybody and everything is moving
backwards except our heroine.
Featuring:
Leah
Sprecher
|
[This
piece is funny because it completely disrupts the entire
episode. This is because it was supposed to go in the
previous week's episode instead of, or in addition to,
"Spring Sing" but Heckman forgot that we had it ready to go.
Whatever. Notice the botched backwards "N" in the calendar.
You try writing an N backwards. Go on, I dare
you.]
|
An
Abrupt Shift:
|
|
|
|
|
The show
swerves from a tribute into a parade of
never-before-seen skitches previously deemed too
extreme to air, punctuated with brief moments of
pornographic photos, now being broadcast with
the philosophy: "Oh, what the hell."

Splendid Day Out:

Being the
exploits of a deformed troll who at the last
moment remembers his girlfriend's/keeper's
admonition to refrain from eating
afterbirth.

[To
me, the real joke of this piece is that the fine-lookin'
girl with the pouty lips and sexy, sashaying hips is the
real-life girlfriend of the troll. Mike disagrees with
me.]
