RIP Mike and Ben

[Myles's comments are in big, blue, Italicized brackets, just like these.]

Originally aired Monday, May 14th.

Rape Trail:

A message from Campus Security Officers warning students against the narrow, steep, dimly lit path leading from campus to the nearby housing.

Featuring: Price Peterson, Roberta Brodsky, * *, Leah Sprecher

[Price hates to appear on camera, but after seeing this piece, I can't imagine how he can still feel that way. His facial reactions are hysterical. I believe this was originally meant to be a companion piece to "Roofies," but it sets a good tone for this dangerous show. If you pay close attention, you can see * do a face plant on the ground as she is chasing Price right before the camera cuts away.]

Opening credits

Hosting sequence #1:

Ben becomes alarmed that Mike may be trying to kill him. Ben's paranoia is aggravated with Mike's peculiar behavior and questions about his life insurance.

Book Fair: The Quest For Fame

Part 1 of 2. Your up-beat correspondent searches for famous people and interviews authors.

Featuring: Myles Nye

[When I showed Roberta the original edit of this piece, she said, "It's good. Isn't it ten minutes long?" And so it was. Whoops. I felt low about labeling the black guy Kareem, especially because his book was actually called something like The Debt: What White America Owes Blacks. But I have to admit it came out pretty funny.]

Hosting sequence #2:

Ben, now confirmed in his fears, pledges to get to the bottom of Mike's peculiar behavior. Mike suggests Ben take a nice refreshing shower.

[My favorite line of this episode: "Don't make the 'doin it' noises like you saw on that commercial. Because nobody likes an asshole."]

Hart 2 Hart:

Sean Hart interviews the only person on campus he has not yet interviewed: himself.

Featuring: Sean Hart, Sean Hart

2000 MB Award Winner:
Best Editing

[We had to try filming this twice before anything came of it. It was exciting to be present and hold the cue cards, however.]

Fudgina:

A promotional gimmick to arouse interest in "Fudgina, the taste sensation that's sweeping the nation." Promoters give away free samples and poll students on their opinion. With a surprise appearance from Noah Bookman, political megastar!

Featuring: Mike Pesses, Sean Heckman, Ben Feller, Judy Ashouri, Sean Mount, Myles Nye (cameo)

2000 MB Award Winner:
Best Mike Quote:
"Oh Fudgina, you tasty, tasty bitch."

[To me, this was a perfectly constructed piece. A funny gag with built-in appeal: everybody likes free food, and we got a lot of people reacting really strongly, either positive or negative, to the fairly blatant double entendre. Attentive viewers may notice the zygote of this piece in the 420 episode: "Fudgina" first passes through Tim's lips, so to speak.]

Carnival:

A carnival barker amidst empty tents invites an invisible crowd to see circus freaks. In stereo.

Featuring: Myles Nye

[There are times where our show is just like a bunch of imaginative people armed with cameras out doing whatever they felt like. This was one of those times. I got to act out a little dream of mine. Rebecca's sister said if this had gone on one more second she would have run screaming from the room.]

Hosting sequence #4:

Ben watches Mike's video diary in hopes of getting some clues as to what he's up to.

Eric Speaks:

Eric, a cast member who has never before had any lines, shares his thoughts on topics such as Los Angeles, women and guns, and the Holocaust. It soon becomes clear why he has never been allowed to speak before.

Featuring: Eric Fagundes

2000 MB Award Winner:
Best Quote:
"If all that if true, how come there are no railroad stations named after Hitler?"

[We cranked this sucker out in 15 minutes. Everybody asks, "What's Eric saying when you mute his voice?" As I recall, he's saying, "I don't know what to say here so I'm just going to move my arms around like this." Any lip readers who want to correct me, feel free to write in.]

Book Fair: Allan Gazzingi, Book Lover

Part 2 of 2. Allan Gazzingi meets a parade of famous authors, living and dead, asking them to sign his book.

Featuring: Sean Hart

< Previous Clip

[The series with e. e. cummings and the adventure of Jesus's name are hysterical. The raw footage did not look especially promising, but never underestimate Sean Hart.]

The Bare Naked Bards: In a World

A commercial for an on-campus comedy troupe and their upcoming performance, "Acting Good." In the style of a cheesy action trailer.

Hosting sequence #4:

Ben confronts Mike with his suspicions and Mike sets his mind at ease. But a twist ending awaits!!!

[Incidentally, there was another hosting bit that came before this one that Thor filmed but didn't make it into the show. Partly, the show was too long, and partly, if you read the script, you'll see there's several times where Mike is supposed to walk out of the frame. Trouble was, when they filmed it, the table was by a window and Mike was clearly visible in the reflection, standing just out of frame, which kind of spoiled the gag. Out it went, but when Ben refers to sharpening letter openers and firing guns, you'll know why, especially if you read the script.]

Closing credits:

Footage of Michelle Kwan sub-titled with messages from Sean Heckman.

That's kinda rad. Now I wanna read the E-mails about this show

Take me, oh take me, back to the top
